All Magic Comes with a Price – Investigating the Ecological Trade-offs of Biodegradable Polyesters
The transition from petroleum-based polymers to biodegradable alternatives in plastic production promises environmental benefits, yet entails complex ecological footprints. This project investigates the hypothesis that the ecological impact of substituting conventional polymers with biodegradable alternatives is characterized by a nuanced trade-off between short- and long-term effects. Specifically, the release of nanoplastics into the environment represents a critical short-term concern necessitating assessment within a broader temporal context. By employing a multidisciplinary approach encompassing material science, environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, and biostatistics, this project aims to elucidate the intricate interplay between polyester composition, dynamics of their (bio)degradation, and the environmental impact of their degradation products. The findings will provide stakeholders in policy-making, industry practices, and environmental management with a more holistic understanding of the implications of transitioning towards biodegradable polymers in plastic production.
