How the Japanese - Czech - Slovak Joint Seminars was established?

(A preliminary personal note by Ales Gottvald)

The history of the JCS-Seminars begun just before the fall of the "Iron Curtain" in 1989, when some Japanese, Czech and Slovak colleagues met at several conferences and meetings in Tokyo (89), Graz (90), Prague (91), Bratislava (91) (see a photo), and Sorrento.

Standing: T. Takagi. M. Hashimoto, XX, J. Slama, XX, A. Gottvald.
Sitting: P. Kabos, O. Benda, K. Miya, I. Brilla sr.

Prof. Kenzo Miya from Japan was a critical influential factor in all seminar initiations which were to become known as the "Central & Eastern European Initiative". Similar seminars are now established between Japan and Hungary, Japan and Poland, Japan and Russia, ...

A leading concept of the JCS-Seminar is to bring together the scientists and engineers dealing with electromagnetic fields in a variety of contexts, and, simultaneously, to promote cooperation in science an technology among the three countries. Due to the large interdisciplinary scope of the Seminar, principal and methodological (rather than empirical) aspects are emphasized.

After an encouraging and rather hasty start of our Seminar in Piestany, June 1992, some new questions later appeared in 1993, after the split of Czechoslovakia. In spite of a tough time-schedule, the 2nd JSC-Seminar held in January, 1994, in Kyoto (see photo), was termed almost an unexpected success. This meeting was attended by about 100 researchers.

The 3rd Japanese-Czech-Slovak Joint Seminar on Applied Electromagnetics (JCS- Seminar) was held in Prague (Czech Republic), from July 5 - 7. The Seminar was hosted by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague, in cooperation with the Institute of Scientific Instruments (Academy of Sciences of the CR) in Brno.

The JCS-Seminar in Prague was attended by more than 60 researchers from Japan, Czech and Slovak Republics, together with colleagues from Hungary, Macedonia and Tunisia. Only oral presentations took place at the Seminar. The associated programme involved a social evening at Nebozízek restaurant and a visit to Karlstejn castle.

After our third session in Prague, the tradition of the JCS-Seminar seemed to be established, though some organization questions still remained. Perhaps the major one was whether to preserve the original plan of the Seminar and to organize the sessions alternately in Japan and Europe (Czech or Slovak Republic). At any rate, it was negotiated in Prague that the fourth meeting should take place in Slovakia, in 1997. It took place in Stara Lesna (September 18-20, 1997). See a corresponding 4JCS WebPage .

We are looking forward to the 5th JCS-Seminar to be held in Sapporo (November 1-3, 1999).
